as "Judith the Countess" is recorded in Domesday Book to have held estates in

[Ref: CP VI p639]
Though generally shown as a child of Lambert of Lens, there is a possibility
that she was a child of the 1st marriage to Euguerrand II of Ponthieu. [Ref:
Weis AR7 #130, Weis AR7 #148]
Catherine Morton and Hope Muntz have argued convincingly that Countess Judith
was not the daughter of Count Lambert but of Enguerrand II, Count of Ponthieu.
The mother of Judith, Adelaide, sister of William the Conqueror, married
Enguerrand as her first husband. He was slain 25 Oct 1053 before the castle of
Arques. Lambert, Count of Lens, her supposed second husband, died less than
ten months later, killed at the siege of Lille in July 1054. Morton and Muntz
point out that Adelaide was living at Aumale, which she had in dower as widow
of Enguerrand, some time after the beginning of 1055, and was later known as
Countess of Aumale. While Judith is associated with her mother Adelaide in the
Aumale endowment, no mention is made of Lambert. The county of Lens passed on
the death of Count Lambert to his brother, Eustace of Boulogne. Nothing went
to Judith, as might have been expected were she his daughter and sole heiress.
Based on these facts, Morton and Muntz reject the only evidence that Judith
was a daughter of Adelaide by Lambert of Lens, a statement in the late (13th
century) and untrustworthy Vita et Passio Waldevi Comitis, and conclude that
she could not have been his daughter [Ref: Hansen WodhullAdditions p151]
when Domesday Book was compiled, she held the barony of Fotheringay [Ref:
Sanders Baronies p118]
principal heir was her elder daughter Matilda [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p286]
