Research Notes:
cannot have been the wife of Robert fitz Swein of Essex as is usually assumed. Her husband was certainly a lord of the Essex fee and was probably a son of the first Robert; this second Robert died without issue and was succeeded by his brother Henry some time between abt 1140 and 1154 [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p761]

Dugdale states that Alice was half-sister of Earl William, but was mistaken [Ref: CP V p115(f)]

Views have differed as to whether Alice's husband, Robert de Essex, was the same man as the Robert de Essex who married Gunnor Bigod and was father of Henry de Essex. K. S. B. Keats-Rohan [Domesday Descendants, pp. 450, 451]
states that Gunnor survived her husband Robert, and remarried to Haimo de St Clair, by whom she had a son Hubert, his father's successor. She therefore revives Round's suggestion, (referred to in CP X AppJ p115(i)), that the Robert de Essex who married Aubrey's sister, Alice, must have been a son of the Robert de Essex who married Gunnor, possibly by an earlier marriage. [Ref: CP++(proposed) EarlyVeres 6/22/2003 (CP X AppJ p115(i))]

as a widow she joined her sister Rohese at Chicksand Priory, but moved to Waldes Abbey at the behest of her nephew William Earl of Essex [Ref: CP X AppJ p116]

1185: living as a widow, age returned as 80 in Essex and 60 in Northants, held Clavering, Essex, in dower from Robert de Essex, and lands from the Earl of Essex, and had 2 sons who were knights and a daughter married to John, the Constable of Chester [Ref: CP X AppJ p116(d), Keats-Rohan DD p761]

her marriage portion of Clavering, in the fee of Henry of Essex, descended toher sons by her second husband [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p761]
