Research Notes:
sister and coheir of William de Tosny, Lord of Belvoir [Ref: CP I p233 (with
corr in XIV p37), CP IX p367 (with corr in XIV p492), CP IX p577, Sanders
Baronies p47(1)]
inherited Barony of Belvoir from brother [Ref: Sanders Baronies p12]
daughter and eventual heiress of Robert de Tosny of Belvoir [Ref: Keats-Rohan
DD p738]
she obtained Belvoir [Ref: Round Belvoir p106]
heir of William de Tosny, Lord of Belvoir [Ref: Sanders Baronies p12]
before 1129: inherited the English lordship of Belvoir; the lordship of
Berengar de Tosny going to her surviving son Hugh [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p380]
1130: on Pipe Roll, accounted for an outstanding debt for her father's
land of Belvoir [Ref: Green Belvoir p1]
survived her husband by many years as Lady of Belvoir [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD
p738]
made a grant for husband's soul to Thetford priory [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p738]
1129/30: occurs as Lady of Belvoir on Pipe Roll [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p739]
1136: occurs in a writ of Stephen [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p739]
her heir was her daughter, Cecily [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p739, Sanders Baronies
p12]
none of her Belvoir property passed to her sons, though her youngest son Hugh
eventually inherited the fee of her sister Albreda, heir of their brother
Berengar [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p739]
it is probable that Roger was married only once, although he is usually
credited with two wives of the same name on the inconclusive evidence of a pro
anama clause in a charter of his son William [Ref: Keats-Rohan Belvoir p1]
the charter of William Bigod (Ego Willielmus Bigot, dapifer regis Anglorum,
pro remedio animarum patris mei Rogerii Bigot et matris meae Adelidis et pro
salute mea et fratris mei Hugonis et sororum mearum (Dugdale, Mon., vol. v,
pp. 148-9)) is interpreted as implying that his mother predeceased him, and
thus that Roger Bigod had two wives both called Adelaide/Alice. But
Keats-Rohan considers the language to be inconclusive, and suggests that Roger
had only one wife. She also refers to a charter of of the time of Henry I
(therefore 1100 or later) of Roger and Adelisa for Rochester Priory, attested
by their children William, Humphrey, Gunnor and Matilda; on the hypothesis of
the Complete Peerage, this would imply that the first wife survived at least
until 1100, despite the suggested birth date of around 1095 for Hugh, seen as
a son of the second marriage [Prosopon, no 9 (1998); K.S.B. Keats-Rohan,
Domesday People, p. 396 (1999)]. [Ref: CP++(proposed) Norfolk 12/31/2006 (CP
IX p578)]
she may have been the mother of Roger Bigod's other children, as Keats-Rohan
has also suggested, and if she was, the singling out of Cecily as her heiress
was noteworthy. Hugh Bigod inherited his father's estates, Robert de Tosny's
Norman estates, and the English estates of his uncle, Berengar, but he was not
to inherit Belvoir, where the claim of his sister was preferred. [Ref: Green
Belvoir p2]
