completed the building of the castle of Berkeley [Ref: CP II p124, Watney
WALLOP #92]
suffered much in the wars between Stephen and the Empress Maud, at the
hands of Walter, son of Miles, Earl of Hereford. He was deprived of the Manor
of Berkeley about 1152, apparently for refusing to recognise the authority of
either party, though he was soon afterwards restored to the Honour of Dursley
[Ref: CP II p124, Watney WALLOP #92]
being deprived of part of his lands by Henry II, made Dursley castle the
center of his barony [Ref: Sanders Baronies p114]
deprived of part of his barony at the end of Stephen's reign, with Robert
fitz Harding being the beneficiary. He reorganized his barony to centre
upon Dursley, Gloucestershire [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p321]
abt 1154/60: secured from Bernard de Saint-Valery freedom of the port of
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p401]
1161: answered for 2 1/2 knights' fees [Ref: Sanders Baronies p114(7)]
1165: charged 7 pounds 12s 6d relief for Barony of Dursley; just under 12
knights' fees; after 1166 Berkeley answered for 5 knights' fees and Dursley
was charged on 7 1/2 [Ref: Sanders Baronies p114(7)]
1166: stated that he had enfeoffed 2 1/2 knights' fees de veteri and that
he held 5 knights and 9 hides on domain [Ref: Sanders Baronies p114(7)]
