It has been claimed by various visitation sources, a Lumley family monumental pedigree in Chester-le-Street, Durham, and an early pedigree dated c.1505 that Thomas Lumley married a bastard daughter of King Edward IV. Several of these sources (including the earliest one dated c.1505) do not state the given name of Thomas Lumley's wife. However, several of the visitations including one as early as 1530 claim that the name of his wife was Elizabeth.
That the given name of his wife was actually Margaret, not Elizabeth, is proven by a contemporary license recorded on Membrane 8 of Roll 1 of William Dudley, Bishop of Durham. An abstract of this record was published many years ago in Annual Report of the Deputy Keeper 35 (1874): 134. Mention of this record was made by the historian, Michael Hicks, in his book, Edward V: The Prince in the Tower (2003). [Ref: Douglas Richardson SGM 10/30/2013-025547]

The evidence for his marriage to Elizabeth bastard daughter of Edward IV is found in two sources. The earliest of these is Harl MS 1074 f 306 (published in Collect Misc et Geneal vol i 1834, p304), which states that Thomas Lumley "wedded a bastard daughter of King Edward IV". This manuscript dates from circa 1505, and is thus virtually contemporary. The next piece of evidence is from Thomas Tonge's Visitation of the North in 1530. This says that Thomas Lumley, s. and h. of George Lord Lumley, married Elizabeth, bastard da of Edward IV, by whom he had Richard, Lord Lumley, and other issue (College of Arms MS E6 f 5b, als in Harl MS 1499 f 47b, see Heraldic Visitation of the Northern Counties in 1530, by Thomas Tonge, ed W.H.D. Longestaffe, Surtees Society, 1863, p.27 for the latter. This manuscript was owned by Thomas Wriothesley, Garter King of Arms, d.1534). The assertion that there were any issue is certainly not true. there is no reason to think that the marriage produced no issue [Ref: CP++ Lumley 8/26/2004 (CP VIII p274(e))]

When Dugdale wrote his Barronage this marriage had already been recorded for many years in the exhaustive "pedigree" that Lord Lumley set up in the church of Chester-le-Street, but Dugdale assigns this daughter of Edward IV to Thomas, Lord Lumley, who d 1485, and says this marriage procured his summons to Parliament, referring as his authority to Leland, Irin, vol vi, vo 63. But Leland says only: "The Advancement of Lumley to be Lord was by Mariage of a Bastard Doughter of King Edwarde 4." If Thomas, Lord Lumley, m a daughter of Edward IV, there must have been at least 50 years difference in age between them; if on the other hand, this Thomas, who d.v.p., married the bastard, the marriage had no influence on the peerage.
