4 Dec 1344: marriage to Isabel le Despenser was annulled, and their children
bastardized by a Papal mandate, on the grounds that he had married her as a
minor without willing consent. The true reason, it seems, is that as her
father had been attained and executed, she was of no great value and he wanted
to marry his mistress [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-254(59)]
4 Dec 1344: obtained a Papal mandate for the annulment of his marriage to
Isabel DESPENSER. "On the petition of Richard, Earl of Arundel and Isabel,
daughter of Hugh Despencer, who at the respective ages of 7 and 8, not by
mutual consent, but by fear of their relations, contracted espousals, and on
coming to years of puberty expressly renounced them, but were forced by blows
to cohabitat, so that a son was born -- Mandate by cannonical procedure to
annul the marriage, they having constantly lived apart, and providing for
their son, so that they may be free to intermary with others." Not mentioned
was one daughter (twins??)
What really happened was that the Earl desired to get rid of the woman to
whom he had been married as a child, and who, since her father's attainder and
execution, had ceased to be of any importance, that he might marry the woman
with whom he was then living in adultry; the Pope very obligingly annulled the
marriage and bastardised the issue [Ref: CP I p243(d)]
likely had only a son, Edmund, by his first wife [Ref: CP++ Arundel 12/31/2006
(CP I p242)]
Complete Peerage sub Arundel states that Richard Fitz Alan, 3rd Earl of
Arundel, had three children by his first marriage to Isabel le Despenser.
However, a close examination of the various papal petitions regarding the
dissolution of this marriage proves this couple had only one child, Edmund de
Arundel.
The other two children assigned to Isabel le Despenser are as follows:
(1) Philippe, wife of Sir Richard Sergeaux. This woman was actually one of
the daughters and co-heirs of Edmund de Arundel, and thus was a granddaughter
of Isabel le Despenser. For proof of Philippe's parentage, see Calendar of
Close Rolls, 1396-1399 (published 1929), pp. 72, 84.
(2) Isabel, wife of John le Strange. This woman was actually named Mary and
she was the wife of John le Strange, Lord Strange of Blackmere. Mary was the
sister of Richard Fitz Alan, 3rd Earl of Arundel, as proved by her papal
petition found in the following source: W. H. Bliss, ed. Cal. Papal Registers:
Petitions, 1342-1419 1 (1896): 484. Another source to consult is Margaret
Aston Thomas Arundel (1967), chart following p. 431. [Ref: Douglas Richardson
