Research Notes:
given a special grant of his father's lands in a charter of Empress Maud,
issued between Christmas 1141 and the end of June 1142 [Ref: CP XI p464]
chiefly known as an associate of Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex, in
his last revolt (with Hugh Bigod) against Stephen in 1144 [Ref: CP XI p464]
died at siege of Burnwell Castle [Ref: Watney WALLOP #883]
According to Henry of Huntingdon, he was killed with the Earl of Essex in Aug
1144 when, after occupying Ramsey Abbey, they were attacking Stephen's fort at
Burwell, Cambs, but there is evidence that William survived the Earl [Ref: CP
XI p464]
Henry of Huntingdon says he and Geoffrey de Mandeville, earl of Essex, were
killed in August 1144, but CP XI p464(f) summarises evidence that William
survived Geoffrey (who did not die until Sep 1144) [Ref: CP++(proposed) Essex
2/11/2003 (CP V p116f)]
The Ramsey Chronicle alleged that he died with his brother-in-law Geoffrey de
mandeville in 1144, but a charter for St Neots shows that he survived him by a
few years [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p681]
