Research Notes:
The name William is used for the eldest son in successive generations of the family during this period and there has always been difficulty in distinguishing a specific William from his father or son. The SP account at II 95-96 is very confused. [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-87(24)]

The accounts of the first 4 Lords are very obscure, and that given in Scots Peerage points to there not being very much advance in precision possible over the one appearing in the 1st edition of CP. It is conceivable that the first 2 Lords in the text may be in fact the same man, but in that case this man must have lived to a great age. [Ref: CP II p221(d)]

sons George and John, both clerks, were acknowledged as 'kinsman of Robert, duke of Albany and governor of Scotland' This connection may have been through the marriage of Sir William [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 12/3/2005-111110]

1368: styled "filius et heres quondam thome de borthwic" and under age when impleaded by Thomas de Haye regarding the lands of Middleton which he claimed as his heritage [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-87]

4 Jun 1410: obtained a charter of the lands of Borthwic and Thoftcotys [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-87]

1 May 1411: a dispensation was issued for the marriage of William Borthwick and Beatrice Sinclair, but there is no clue as to which William Borthwick is meant [Ref: SP II p95 (with corr in IX p39)]

styled variously of Catcune, Ligertwood, and Borthwick [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-87]

through his service to Archibald, fourth Earl of Douglas, brought the family into contact with the royal court [Ref: ODNB 54135 Borthwick]
