Research Notes:
dapifer to Count Stephen [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p258, Keats-Rohan DD p988]
steward of Richmond [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p956]
either son or son-in-law of Bardulf, former being more probable [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p988]
acquired half of the fee from Bardulf, who had acquired it from his
brother Bodin [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p257]
the name Scolland is fairly rare, but it is evidenced in association with
Yqelon (Manche) in Normandy in the Cartulary of Mont-Saint-Michel. One of the
abbey's monks, Scolland, became abbot of St Augustine's Canterbury during the
time of William I. An eleventh-century inquisition from the abbey, which is
closely comparable to the text of Domesday Book, gave two of Abbot Scolland's
tenants as Acharias and macharius. In the Castle Acre Cartulary we find
Scolland's sons Brien and Helias attesting in company with the sons of a
Macharius. The occurrence in two distinct places and times of three unusual
names is surely significant, suggesting a relationship between both groups,
and that the mother of Bardulf and Bodin was from the Yquelon family [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p258]
Scolland appears in charters in close proximity to Acarias. Whilst he was
dapifer to Count Stephen he preceded Acarias in witness lists, otherwise
he followed him, suggesting that if he were Bardulf's son, he was the
younger son [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p258]
benefactor of Catle Acre priory, to which his grants were confirmed by
his son Brien and grand-daughter Constance [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p258]
