Research Notes:
heiress of Dalserf and Galston [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-83]
ancestor by her first husband of the hamiltons of Cadzor (who got
Dalserf) [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-83]
abt 1383: settled Galston on her second husband and their heirs [Ref: Thompson
CharlesII v12-83]
11 Dec 1406: a charter of hers as "Domina de Gallyston" in favor of her
son Andrew Hamilton was witnessed by Sir William Hamilton and John Stewart
of Cruickistoun (i.e. Darnley), each styled her son [Ref: Thompson CharlesII
v12-83]
25 Feb 1421/2: referred to as "his mother" by John Stewart of Darnley,
Constable of the Scots, in a petition granted at Rome [Ref: Thompson CharlesII
v12-83]
Andrew Stuart, Genealogical History of the Stewarts, and SP v6 p29 incorrectly
show Janet Keith, living 1421, as daughter of the noted Sir William Keith of
Galston. As she was born no earlier than about 1350, her father could not be
that Sir William (who was actually her grandfather) as he was slain in 1336
[Ref: Thompson CharlesII v23-74(10)]
Sir Lewis Stewart, in his manuscript collections, wrote that the mother
of Janet Keith was a Galbraith heiress (as cited by Stuart, Genealogical
History of the Stewarts, p86), but in fact this was her paternal
great-grandmother, the wife of Sir Bernard de Keth [Ref: Thompson CharlesII
v23-74(11)]
