[WTM: apparently incorrect in saying "wrongly"] sometimes, but wrongly, called
Master of Sutherland [Ref: CP XII/1 p546(j), SP II p334]
Master of Sutherland [Ref: MacEwen 7Countesses Caithness p84, Thompson
CharlesII v04-146]
Sir Robert Gordon asserts that he was the son of Robert, 6th Earl, but
the statements made regarding him cannot be verified, and it is possible
that he may have been placed in the wrong generation [Ref: SP VIII p330]
long believed by all Scottish genealogists to have been the Master of
Sutherland, the elder brother of John, third Earl, but in the Sutherland
Peerage Case, in 1771, this was proved to be a mistake; his will, made in
1456, having been discovered and produced [Ref: MacEwen Sutherland of Dunbeath

dispensation for marriage shows he and Mariota de Yle were related in the
third and third degree, both great-grandchildren of King Robert II [Ref:
MacEwen Sutherland of Dunbeath p139]
10 Oct 1444: as Master of Sutherland, witnessed a charter granted by
Alexander, Earl of Ross, at Inverness [Ref: CP XII/1 p546, MacEwen Sutherland
of Dunbeath p132]
style of "Master" indicates an heir to a Scottish peerage, and heirs
presumptive were Masters pro tem. Not necessarily just a son. Could be the
lord's son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, or whatever. In this
case (10 Oct 1444) he was the Earl's brother, who at that time had no heir of
legal age [Ref: MacEwen Sutherland of Dunbeath p133]
20 Jul 1448: papal mandate, to dispense for the marriage of "Alexander de
Sutherland, brother german of the Earl of Sutherland, and Margaret MacLoide"
[Ref: MacEwen Sutherland-more p225]
administered the Earldom of Sutherland during the long absence in England
of his older brother John [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v04-146]
his will showed a very substantial estate and a large family of
illegitimate children [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v04-146]
