raised an exile in England, presumed to have returned to Scotland in Edward Balliol's wake in or after 1332 [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-251]

1338: made a grant to his father's sister Mary[Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-251]

8 Sep 1354: as John of Lorne, Lord of Argyll, quitclaimed lands to John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, and they agreed that they would behave as brothers of one flesh [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v12-251]

the most accurate pedigree of the family is that given in CP 8:143, but it contains errors, the most notable being the failure to distinguish between John MacAlan (who succeeded his uncle Ewen between 1334 and 1338 and died about 1355) and his son and heir John, the husband of Janet Isaac. Andrew B.W. MacEwen write: John MacAlan's second wife, Christina of Craignish, was mother of Catherine of Lorne, first wife of Colin Iongantach Campbell of Lochawe.. Had there been only one John, there would have been three heiresses of Lorne, with the wife of Colin Iongantasch as the eldest. We should certainly have heard about that!!
