Hammond deals with the issue of the three daughters of Alan Durward and
his wife Margery. Hammond musters sufficient evidence to make the
identification of Anne, wife of Colban, Earl of Fife as one of these daughters
as probable, if not proved. (Hammond, Matthew, "Hostiarii Regis Scotie: the
Durward family in the thirteenth century, pp118-138, in Boardman, Steve and
Alasdair Ross, editors, The Exercise of Power in Medieval Scotland, 2003)
[Ref: John Ravilious SGM 11/1/2006-115931]
one of the 3 daughters of Alan Durward, by Margery of Scotland:
1. Matthew Hammond wrote, with reference to a charter dated 1266x1272: '
Colban, earl of Fife, and his wife Anna, probably Alan Durward's daughter,
granted the land of Glensalauch in the Mearns, which they held of Alan Durward
and Alan held of the king, to Magister William Wishart,...' [Hammond, p.
13312, cites Kinnoull Charters, Perth, no. 114]
2. also, re: her son Duncan, Earl of Fife, Hammond wrote, ' His charter
refers to Alan Durward as 'propinquus', indicating a close relationship.'
[Hammond. p. 13612 cites Kinnoull charters, Perth, no. 114]
evidence as to her marrying (2ndly) Sir William de Ferrers:
Sir William de Ferrers (husband of Anne) received the manors of Woodham
Ferrers and Stebbing, Essex, and the capital messuage of Chiche and Fairsted
to hold of his father and his heirs by the service of five knights' fees, 12
Dec 1251. Importantly, he had livery of these lands ca 1256, but then ***he
exchanged them with his mother for lands in 'Galloway and Scotland', including
Leuchars, co. Fife [CP Vol V, p. 343n]. He received these English lands back
from his mother prior to her death, Feb 1280/81 [had livery of same, 11 May
1281], but I would take his interest in the Scottish lands of his mother, and
esp. their location in Fife & such as a VERY CLEAR indication of a Scottish
connection. Note that his wife Anne was the Countess Dowager of Fife. [Ref:
