Research Notes:
Seigneur of Reviers, Vernon, and Nehou, in Normandy [Ref: CP IV p309]
parentage unknown, but conjectured to have been son and heir of William de
Vernon [Ref: CP IV p310]
stated by an early source (cited by CP) to be nephew of William Fitz Osbern.
Suspect that this tradition records the memory that William Fitz Osbert was an
older male relative of Richard, rather than a precise genealogical
relationship [Ref: Farmerie Gunnor]
Richard's son Baldwin had an uncle (avunculus) Hugh, who may be the Hugh de
Redeveris mentioned in a memorandum of La Trinite at Caen, and also the Hugh
mentioned as son o fWilliam de Vernon in a document (of date about 1067) in
the cartulary of La Trinite at Rouen, signed by William Vernonensis and Emma
his wife (CP IV p310(a)). But the charter for La Trinete at Rouen actually
mentions a William son of Hugh, not a Hugh son of William (CP++ Devon) [Ref:
CP IV p310(a), CP++ Devon 11/8/2004 (CP IV p310)]
probably the Richard de Rethviers who granted land in Bourg-Beaudouin,
near Rouen, to Sainte-Trinite du Mont, Rouen [Ref: Keats-Rohan RobertTorigny
p26]
after accession of Henry I he was given the honour of Plympton, a collection
of former Domesday tenancies-in-chief that was to become the earldom of Devon
[Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p360]
Barony of Christchurch, which was part of the royal domain in Domesday
Book, was granted by Henry I to Richard; the estate, sometimes called a
barony, was part of the honour of Plympton [Ref: Sanders Baronies p112]
Plympton, which was part of the royal domain in Domesday Book, was
granted by Henry I to Ricahrd [Ref: Sanders Baronies p137]
