Research Notes:
first wife identified in error as Sarah, daughter of Robert fita Hugh. The
record in the Pipe Rolls includes the following: 'William Cumin accounts for
25 marks and a palfrey for having to wife the younger daughter of Robert Fitz
Hugh, with a reasonable part of the frank tenement which was the said
Robert's. He has paid into the treasury 20 marks; and he owes 5 marks and a
palfrey [Pipe Rolls, 3 John, Rot 13]. She is usually identified as Sarah,
younger dau and coheiress of Robert fitz Hugh: '..his 1st wife Sarah, yr da
and coh of Robert FitzHugh' (citing CP XI:143 note (e), cites Scots Peerage
vol i, p.505, Pipe Roll 3 John p.183, 6 John p.140). J.H.Round has shown that
Sarah died without issue. The name of William Comyn's first wife is in fact
unknown [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 10/29/2007-225008]
13 Jun 1213: hostages of the King of Scotland, held for King John,
ordered to be surrendered and sent to Portsmouth "... it is to be observed
that Alan de Galweya's daughter, who was in custody of Robert fitz Roger, is
dead; and the son of William Cumin, who was in custody of Eustace de Vescy, is
discharged." It is fairly certain that this son of William Comyn was related
to Eustace de Vescy, and was son by first wife. Conjecture that William
Comyn's first wife was a sister of Eustace de Vescy [Ref: John Ravilious SGM

Robert Fitz Hugh, son of Robert Fitz Sewin ... in 1 John (1199) the sheriff
deducted 14pounds blench for Upton, in possession of Robert de Bella-aqua, or
Bellew, who had married the eldest daughter and coheiress of Robert Fitz Hugh.
In 6 John (1204) William Cumin, husband of the youngest coheiress, owed a
palfrey, worth five marks (3 pounds 6 shillings 8 pence), or five marks in
money, for a settlement respecting the fine made between Robert de Bella-aqua
and James the Jew, of Northampton, concerning the debts of Robert Fitz Hugh.
The widow of Bellew was married to John de Cancell or Chaunceux in 15 Hen 3
(1230-1), and being then designated daughter and heiress of Robert Fitz Hugh,
it may be presumed her sister was dead without issue. [Ref: Baker
Northamptonshire p222]
We may trace, perhaps, the same idea in Lyon's suggestion that the first
wife of Richard Cumin's son and successor, William, 'may have been a daughter
of Robert Fitz Hugh, who in 1201-2 is said to have married a William Cumin,
who paid fines for the marriage' (p.505); for, apart from the fact that, on
Lyon's showing, William must in that case have married his first wife some
fifty-six years after his father's marriage, Sara, younger daughter and
co-heiress of Robert Fitz Hugh, who is the wife referred to, died s.p. [Ref:
