1216-1219 Regent of the Kingdom [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v4p40, Weis AR7 #66]
A crusader of distinction for two years, Marshall covered the flight of King
Henry II from Le Mans to Chinon in 1189, and in a skirmish unhorsed the
undutiful Prince Richard Coeur de Lion. None the less, Richard, on his
accession, promoted William Marshall and confirmed the former King's license
for his marriage. This match gave Marshall the rank of an Earl, with great
estates in Wales and Ireland and he was included in the council of regency
which the King appointed in 1190 on his departure for the Third Crusade.
Although he quarreled more than once with King John, William Marshall was one
of the few Englishmen who clung to the royal side through the Barons' war. He
was one of John's executors and was subsequently elected regent of the kingdom
by the royalist barons in 1216. [Ref: Wurts MCBarons p423]
In his earldom he was succeeded in turn by each of his five sons, including
the surety William Marshall. These five sons all died without issue, but
descents are recorded through each of the five daughters. [Ref: Wurts MCBarons
